Today's projects

 Canna Lily
5x5
oil on canvas
Clematis
5x5
oil on canvas

These are the two little paintings I finished today. The top one I did from a photo I took of the Canna in my yard. The second one is from a photo I took quite a while ago and I don't remember where I took it or what kind of flower it is. I was told today that it looks like Clematis. Since the picture was taken from the backside of the flower I have no idea what the center looks like or even what color it is. So apparently I'd better take better reference shots or at least take notes when I do them so years later when I use the pics for a painting I'm not clueless.

Anyway, it's still fun to play with cropping on florals and focus more on the abstract quality of the composition. I'll be adding these to the Etsy shop soon.

Delicious! I love creams and yellows so the Canna Lily is my fav...Clemetis eh? I dunno about that one but hey, maybe our Clemetis up north looks different! LOL During an art show I was once confronted by a frustrated flower lover who asked me why artists had to cut off parts of the flower. I gently tried to explain the difference between 'art' and a photo but she left unconvinced. This woman liked a Day Lily piece of mine but she couldn't get past the fact that I had cropped the tips of the petals. Oh dear...

My mom who is a Master Gardener is the one who told me she thinks it's Clematis but isn't sure since she couldn't see the front so I got on line and googled it looking for images to compare. I couldn't believe how many different looking flowers were all consider to be clematis! Some of them didn't even look related so who knows. Maybe I should just change the name to Pink Flower :)

And yeah.... amazing how many people really don't understand the cropping. Sometimes the explanation just takes too long.
